A historic fishing family
Our Story
The Westerberg family has been fishing the great southern coast of Western Australia since the early 1900's. We have been involved in many fisheries as they have come and gone and currently have focused our efforts on beach seining Australian Herring and Australian Salmon, as well as purse seining Sardines.
We currently operate 2 purse seine vessels out of Albany that target Sardines. These Sardines are landed within 3 hours of being caught and are processed in our 2000m2 factory that is located 5 minutes from the center of town.
As well as the Sardines we also catch Salmon and Herring via beach seining at Cheynes Beach. The Westerberg family has been fishing Cheynes Beach since the 1930's.
Our Vessels
Commando II is a 60ft (18.4m) bondwood vessel that was built in 1982 by "MARKO" boat builders. It worked tirelessly as a cray fishing vessel on the W.A. coast until 2002 when it was retired from the daily grind that cray fishing is. Since 2004 when Albany seafoods purchased it, it has slipped into more of a lifestyle fishery that is purse seining Sardines in Albany. Completing about 100 trips per year this old girl is still going strong and gives a ride over the southern ocean that is second to none.

Illusion II is a 65ft (19.8m) aluminium fishing vessel built by Legend Boat Builders in 2002. She was built as a cray fishing vessel and fished in the cray industry for 9 years before being purchased by Albany Seafoods. In 2011 she underwent a significant refit to become a Sardine Purse Seine vessel. Illusion II completes over 150trips per year and fishes over all 12 months making her the "workhorse".
